Every Freddie Gibbs album is a celebration of rap. $oul $old $eperately, the American rapper%27s fifth album, is a hip-hop album infused with intriguing samples, evocative soul vocals and colossal rhythms—but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Gibbs, an exceptional all-rounder, showcases his powerful voice on a wide variety of grooves. One such example is ‘Feel No Pain’, conceived by Anderson .Paak, on which the great Raekwon makes a notable appearance. There are other colossal guest appearances, too. Inevitably, we find the calm but powerful Rick Ross on the track ‘Lobster Omelette’, Offset on the versatile ‘Pain & Strife’, and DJ Paul (founding member of Three 6 Mafia) on ‘PYS’. So, aside from the feats and the tradition, what else does this album have to offer? The answer lies in the track ‘Grandma’s Stove’, where Gibbs chants: ‘I smoke a blunt to take the pain out’ and ‘If I wasn’t high, I’d probably try to blow my brains out.’ There’s a subtle element of melancholy and self-deprecation about him that contrasts with his typical confidence. This is undoubtedly what drives him to collaborate with other musicians who can lead him into different musical zones, as Kaytranada does on the track ‘Zipper Bagz’.
