详细介绍:

At 84, Charles Lloyd could happily revel in his status as a living legend of Afro-American jazz, playing the same nostalgic jazz-folk pieces that brought him fame in the late 60s. This is not the case, however. Indeed, the turn of the 90s saw the saxophonist embark on a fascinating second leg of his career, accumulating masterpieces while constantly pushing the boundaries of his musical style. The saxophonist has never seemed as free and creative as he does today. His new album, Trios: Chapel, proves this. Here he’s accompanied by guitarist Bill Frisell (who he’s been playing alongside for several years in his quintet The Marvels) and double bassist Thomas Morgan. Recorded in the intimate acoustics of the Coates Chapel in San Antonio, Texas, in December 2018, this concert lets us hear three musicians who have been touched by grace (the spirit of the venue, perhaps?) as they engage in a tight rope walk without a safety net. Delicate interlacing, exquisite ellipses, faintly sketched phrases: everything meticulously and collectively developed.

Carried by the stunning harmonies and almost galactic feel of Frisell’s guitar, the saxophone’s pure and serene tone conveys a heartrending fragility as it performs a series of sumptuous melodies, namely those from Billy Strayhorn’s 'Blood Count' and 'Ay Amor' by Cuban singer Bola de Nieve. Three original compositions by Lloyd also feature, encompassing the periods and styles that have marked his career. Although the music is deeply rooted in jazz, it traverses all the genres that have previously influenced his playing and imagination over the years (from American folk to many other western styles). Charles Lloyd has created a new masterpiece here. Trios: Chapel has been announced as the first volume of a “trilogy of trios”, with the saxophonist planning to collaborate with Anthony Wilson and Gerald Clayton on one volume, and Julian Lage and Zakir Hussain on the other. Needless to say, we're looking forward to this. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
