详细介绍:

John Williams and cellist Yo-Yo Ma have been friends for many years. They first collaborated back in the 80s, when Williams had just become the conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. Together they’ve recorded a number of film soundtracks that have really left their mark on the history of cinema ( 7 Years in TibetMemoires of a Geisha…). Their lengthy collaboration and friendship has undoubtedly influenced the way this duo composes and plays their music, as evidenced by the Cello Concerto, the central piece on this recording. Originally composed in 1994 at Tanglewood by Yo-Yo Ma and John Williams themselves, the work was recorded for the first time in 2001 with the same artistic team. Over the years, the piece has undergone numerous changes during touring performances. Today, for the first time in 20 years, Ma and Williams offer the world a completely revised version of this concerto. Having nearly 30 years to practice the piece has undeniably given the score greater depth, especially in the fourth movement where the cello and the orchestra come together for a dazzling finale.

The other pieces that comprise this programme are taken from the soundtracks of MunichSchindler’s List and Lincoln. While these compositions are already well-known (these three Spielberg films are firmly anchored in our collective memory), there’s real pleasure to be found in rediscovering Spielberg’s dramatic and unforgettable imagery through Williams’ masterful transcription. Yo-Yo Ma, John Williams and Steven Spielberg are undoubtedly a world-class trio. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz
