详细介绍:

Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Fazil Say have been playing together for almost twenty years in hundreds of concerts and several albums. Fazil Say even composed his Violin Concerto for this violin prodigy. Their two explosive and original personalities come together in perfect harmony, and this album—recorded in Berlin in the summer of 2022—only serves to prove that.

This meticulously prepared programme offers a rare combination of Bartók and Janáček with Brahms. The avant-garde nature of Brahms’ work wasn’t lost on Arnold Schoenberg, who wrote about his progressive style in a famous essay. It’s the quasi-impressionist element of Brahms’ Sonata No. 3 in D minor that boldly permeates this interpretation by Kopatchinskaja and Say.

Placed in the centre of their recital, Brahms’ work is preceded by the Sonata for violin and piano, written by Leoš Janáček in 1914 in the aftermath of the events at Sarajevo which would incite the First World War. This is a sombre, pessimistic work tinged with fleeting folkloric elements, which concludes with an incredibly ruthless adagio. Patricia Kopatchinskaja notes that it’s ‘extreme music’ which requires almost superhuman fortitude. Sonata No. 1 by Béla Bartók, composed in 1921, brings the recital to a shimmering close with its three very distinct movements, which range from dark to grotesque: an omnipresent element of the Hungarian composer’s work. Only two musicians of this calibre could overcome the substantial challenges found within Bartók’s work, especially in the final allegro—though these two talents succeed in making it sound carefree and fun. © François Hudry/Qobuz
