After two Grammy Awards and numerous accolades for his singing and songwriting, Still Rising is much more of a celebration of the ongoing artistry of Gregory Porter than a summation of his work. From his 2010 debut to this comprehensive new release, Porter has been an artist whose oeuvre straddles generations—it is rare to find a contemporary artist whose songs can remind you of icons as diverse as Donny Hathaway, Nat King Cole and Oscar Brown Jr., but Gregory Porter%27s smooth voice and compelling lyrics belong to an era of jazz when this music was heard on the radio and played in clubs large and small.
This new collection does include previously released classics like the fiery 1960 What? and his gospel-tinged Liquid Spirit, as well as new tracks such as I Will and Dry Bones that highlight his broad songwriting range, along with new arrangements of his Real Good Hands and No Love Dying.
Surprises abound on the second half of this set, with guest appearances from Dianne Reeves on the sultry Satiated (Been Waiting), Don%27t Let Me Be Misunderstood with Jamie Cullum, and Right Where You Are featuring the rich voice of Lizz Wright. The songs that reflect Gregory Porter%27s respect for the history of jazz most clearly are those where he duets with the voices of Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London and Nat King Cole. His soulful voice fits in so well with these late greats that it is easy to envision Porter headlining the Copa or Café Society in an era when you stepped out in your finest to visit those clubs.
