In 1970/1971, Derek and the Dominos was a short-lived band put together by Eric Clapton with members of Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, Bobby Whitlock (keyboards), Carl Radle (bass) and Jim Gordon (drums). The only discographic output from this venture, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, is peak blues rock in which Duane Allman, the legendary guitarist of the Allman Brothers, makes a notable appearance. It is this masterpiece that the Tedeschi Trucks Band have decided to revisit from top to bottom. The guitarist/singer Susan Tedeschi, her husband, guitarist Derek Trucks, and their accomplices bring class and assurance to bear on this material, which blurs the boundaries between electric blues, classic rock, country, and vintage soul. Layla Revisited was recorded on 24 August 2019 on the stage of the LOCKN%27 Festival in Arrington, Virginia, with a distinguished guest: Trey Anastasio, guitarist from the band Phish. “By the time that I started playing guitar, Trucks said of Layla, the sound of Duane Allman’s slide was almost an obsession. His playing on Layla is still one of the high-water marks for me. The spirit, the joy, the recklessness, and the inevitability of it. My dad would play that record for me and my brother to fall asleep to and further sear it into my DNA.” This live recording brings out the joy with which the artists play and stretch out endless jams across the nine scorching minutes of the title track.
