详细介绍:

Rarely do rhythm sections become full-fledged bands. But drummer Kenny Aronoff and bassist Fabrizio (Fab) Grossi have a crucial gimmick: inviting guest guitar players to cut tracks with the band. Given the guest schtick, the group%27s studio albums have subsequently become guitar showcases featuring Steve Lukather, Eric Gales, Robben Ford, Walter Trout, Chris Duarte and others. The band%27s last album, Road Chronicles, was recorded in Italy with ZZ Top%27s Billy Gibbons as the featured player. There is genuine talent in this trio, particularly when it comes to Aronoff%27s drumming. His resume includes stops with The Smashing Pumpkins, John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson among others. The Italy-born Grossi has played with Gary Clark Jr. and Slash, and heads a musical project called the Soul Garage Experience.  The pair met when they were the rhythm section for Toto guitarist Steve Lukather%27s side project, Goodfellas.  Lance Lopez, the group%27s first guitarist has since been supplanted by British singer/guitarist/MMA fighter Kris Barras.  On the fourth album, the problem has become twofold: running out of guests to invite and repeating themselves as songwriters. The originals have become formulaic and indistinguishable from each other. And despite the hyperbolic name, this is heavy rock with very little blues to speak of. (An actual blues cover or two might have helped a lot.) Given that style choice, it%27s not too surprising that the music, all recorded by Grossi at his Soul Garage studio in North Hollywood, is compressed, overloud and generally a big thumping power trio rock sound meant to boom out in a live setting. After three very ordinary opening tracks, Money, Too Late, and Coming Thru of just the trio playing alone, guests like famed Louisiana slide guitarist Sonny Landreth try to add interest to originals like 8 Ball Lucy. While the closing pop track All Our Love loses the banging and shows promise thanks in part to the slide guitar from Blackberry Smoke%27s Charlie Starr, the title track is the kind of power jam that%27s been done better before by many acts. Not surprisingly, the best song here, Is It All, also features the most interesting guest, blues soul veteran Joe Louis Walker, whose singing blows away that of Barras, who is more of a rock screamer. Blues with a small b, this machine grinds out power trio rock for those who like it loud. © Robert Baird/Qobuz
