详细介绍:

She may wear nudie suits and cowgirl boots, but Margo Price cannot be pinned down as country. Like her old pal Sturgill Simpson, she works hard for her outsider label—and on her fourth album, she%27s so far outside she%27s in a whole other genre. Having shed the Loretta Lynn drag of her Nashville breakthrough, 2016%27s Midwest Farmer%27s Daughter, Price is letting herself get weird, and it%27s awesome. Strays was recorded in Topanga Canyon and partly written while Price and husband/multi-instrumentalist band member Jeremy Ivey were tripping on mushrooms. Opener Been to the Mountain rides a deep and heavy bad-ass groove with Price giving a three-minute recap of her 2022 memoir, Maybe We%27ll Make It: I%27ve been a child and I%27ve been a mother … Used to be your waitress but now I%27m a consumer/ I%27ve been on food stamps, I%27ve been outta my mind/ I%27ve rolled in dirty dollars, stood in the welfare line … I%27ve been called every name in the book, honey/ Come on, take your best shot. (That last line is delivered with heavy reverb and a triumphant wail.) Light Me Up starts off on a tender %2770s singer-songwriter vibe before jangling into a Heart-like psych-out with fiery guitar—courtesy of the Heartbreakers%27 Mike Wilson. Wilson%27s late musical partner Tom Petty is like the friendly ghost of the album, which seemingly takes inspiration from his Wildflowers era as well as his and Wilson%27s old band Mudcrutch. Sharon Van Etten backs up Price on head trip Radio, with Price issuing a plea for taking a break from the world that could also double as a sexy come-on: Only thing I have on is the radio. Piano ballad County Road channels Linda Ronstadt%27s late %2770s band with a canyon dust-and-sun squint, and Time Machine twinkles with a Rickie Lee Jones sweetheart groove—Price pushing into her upper register as producer Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty) sets the mood with Moog bass. Lucius%27 Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig lend trademark high-class vocals to the Revolver psych-pop of Anytime You Call. As always, Price%27s lyrics are so incisive as to be capable of cutting to the bone. Lydia is a haunting, almost spoken-word observation on the horrors and hardships of living on the fringes and making decisions dictated by poverty and substance abuse, and how much harder things are once women%27s rights are stripped away—like Go Ask Alice in a song. At the clinic, wonderin%27 what your face would be like/ Mascara bleedin%27 to my eyes/ Tied like a dog on a chain with a midlife crisis and an ex-husband/ Sneaking a Marlboro Ultra Light I stole from a nurse out there in the alley/ Halfway home is where the heart is and I%27m halfway home, she speak-sings. And the bluesy strutter Change of Heart delivers a kiss-off as dark as anything by Richard and Linda Thompson: Don%27t worry about the war/ Nobody%27s winning … I never loved you and I always will/ Have a change of heart/ I%27ve had a change of heart.
