This Spaniard burst onto the scene in 2018 with her second album El Mal Querer which offered a skilful fusion of R&B, flamenco and electro. With this record, Rosalia Vila Tobella showcases her extraordinary voice and a hidden propensity to experiment. She puts everything into this third release, and Motomami reveals an artist who’s completely freed herself from the chains of musical expectation. There are those who feared that once she signed to a major label, she would become nothing more than a Beyoncé spin-off, however, Rosalia has proved them all wrong with this album that breaks the bonds of modern pop, mixing flamenco, salsa, bachata, hip-hop, soul and, of course, reggaeton.
Rosalia, who claims to have listened to legends such as Ivy Queen and Don Omar whilst making this album, has really focussed on dembow. Reggaeton rhythm can be heard on half a dozen tracks, but it always deviates from the norm: an ultra-nervous electro bass on SAOKO, underwater vibes on CANDY, an industrial sound on CHICKEN TERIYAKI or superimposed 90’s synths on BIZCOCHITO. This album/mixtape is her most intimate yet, and Rosalia sings like never before, alternating solo piano and vocals with furious percussion, and she’s clearly drawn influence from Venezuelan musician Arca (CUUUUuuuuuute and HENTAI, produced by The Neptunes). She even treats herself to a cover of Delirio de Grandeza by Justo Betancourt, which was originally recorded in 1968 for the legendary salsa label, Fania.
