Burna Boy has helped define today’s Afropop with his long list of acclaimed hits and featurings, so it’s no wonder that he’s enjoying global success. On Love, Damini, his fourth album, the Nigerian star continues doing what he does best. There are some incredible tracks on this release, such as Different Size, a duet with his compatriot Victony (whose over-produced vocals contrast with the very raw tracks that precede it), as well as the behemoth For My Hand with Ed Sheeran, and Rollercoaster (produced by the French beatmaker Skread and featuring the king of reggaeton, J Balvin). Love, Damini makes no secret of Burna Boy’s intentions to advance his way to the top of the charts, and his audacious efforts really shine. Science, Jagele and the fantastic single Kilometre prove that his music is a force to be reckoned with whilst still maintaining his signature effortless, suave sound. When he ventures into R&B territory—notably with Kehlani and Blxst on Solid—Burna Boy is at the top of his game. This album, which is definitely more innovative than his previous release, Twice As Tall, doesn’t play it safe.
